Making Nice at Thanksgiving Dinner

I was aware that dinner would be a challenge. My daughter-in-law's parents are farmers and very conservative. They are ultra-Christian and do not like Obama or Democrats. My son and his wife are both education professionals and identify as progressives. My son professes to be an atheist, not sure about his wife. My hubby is a moderate, Democrat and supported Obama. I am progressive, Democrat. So, what to discuss at dinner? Crafty daughter-in-law selected some life issue questions and put them under our plates. We each took turns reading our question and then going around the table sharing our answers. It was a good idea and we did learn about each other in more depth than we'd done at previous dinners. The devil must have gotten to my daughter-in-law because she threw out an Obama reference like a gauntlet before her father. It wasn't long before he got in a few RW talking points. My hubby and I both bit our tongues. I almost choked when her dad mentioned the 51% relying on the government handouts. Has he heard of farm subsidies? Oh, well. Gotta keep the peace.
